Nikolaev Yacht Club

004 Nikolaev Yacht Club was one of the oldest in the Russian Empire. It was founded in 1887 thanks to the group that had initiated that work. It consisted of an adjutant of the Chief Commander of the Black sea Fleet and ports Golikov E.N., historian Arkas N.N. and an outstanding scientist Rjumin V.V.

A place for the construction had been chosen in Spassk, which was a suburb of Nikolaev at that time. Spassk, Spassk Garden, Spassk Tract, Spasskoe - these were the names that had been given to this large piece of land at the estuary.

019 026 At the bank of the tract there were three wells. The biggest one was called "The Turkish (Sultan's) fountain". During the restoration of the Potemkin's Palace (in the middle of the XIXth century) this fountain together with the palace was reconstructed in Moorish Style. There is a legend that Ivan Mazepa and Swedish King Karl the XII rested at this well, when they were running away from the enemy's army after the defeat at Poltava Battle. The Palace of Potemkin was a summer residence of the Chief Commander of the Black Sea Fleet.

023 022 At the end of the XIXth century part of the land of Spasska was given to Nikolaev Yacht Club. In 1904 a building in the Italian Renaissance style was erected by the architect Leopold Rode. It was separated from the water by the wall made from sea cannons, that were dug into the ground. Now this building is one of the prettiest sights of the city.

021 66 people were the first members of the Nikolaev Yacht Club. The Commodores of Yacht Club were outstanding people: adjutant of the Chief Commander of the Black Fleet and ports E.N.Golikov, Commander of the Nikolaev Sea Port S.P.Tirov, historian and music writer N.N. Arkas.

By the beginning of the year 1914 under the banner of Yacht Club 300 sportsmen were united and the fleet consisted of 109 vessels. Every morning, at eight o'clock according to the sea ceremonial yachtsmen were raising a banner, which was pulled down at the sunset. During the holidays and Sundays the yachts, that stood at the roads and by the mooring line were decorated with flags of different colours. In the evenings lamps were shining and the orchestra was playing.

017 At the difficult times of Revolution and Civil War (1917-1921) the best yachts were taken abroad or burnt. During the third decade of the XXth century Yacht Club was rebuilt. "To provide the mass recreation of the workers" at the territory of Spasska summer cinema was constructed, stage was built in a form of an open shell and the pavilion with benches. Actors played there and films were shown.

Multiple victories of the sportsmen in the races of the highest and the most prestigious levels had made the Nikolaev Club a School that had the great authority in the former Soviet Union and all over the world. Thanks to the yachtsmen, the city that was closed to foreigners started to be internationally renowned.

020 Occupation of Nikolaev by the German fascists in 1941-1944 brought a lot of damage to Yacht Club. After the city was liberated it became obvious that all the fleet was taken away to Romania, and the vessels that stayed were destroyed. There was not even one yacht at the mooring line of the Club. But soon the sailing sport went through revival and in 1949 in Nikolaev The Competition of the Soviet Union was organized in this kind of sport.

Starting with the 60-s up to 80-s of the previous century the Yacht Club went through the times of unbelievable athletic development. Outstanding victories of Nikolaev athletes at the international competitions, circumnavigation of Nikolaev yachtsman Boris Nemirov promoted sailing sport and made Nikolaev famous.
For 15 years in a row yachtsmen from all over Ukraine come to Nikolaev to participate in the annual ecological sailing regatta named after Sergei Shapovalov.
